I am speechless. Now you don’t know me, but I think I have logorrhea. Look it up. I have never had a career. Lots of insignificant jobs. I have lifelong health issues, including severe hearing loss. So... your choices, your processes, are enriching you, I think.

My husband died 6/13/23. Married almost 50 years. I went from writing (where my heart always ways) to doing mixed media art. I started an art journal. Escaping words for art. It feels weird.

So you need to do what feels right. Claim it. Be it!!

Thank you for sending me this support and understanding. I read about the condition and I’m surprised given your skill with words here. But I have more to learn about it. I’m so sorry for your recent loss, and heartened that you found ways that feel new and challenging (in a good way) to process your grief and to explore this new page of your life. All my love and best to you. Thank you so much for reading and sharing. ❤️

You can take it or leave it (agree or not), but most corporate assistant positions are filled by women. These are usually entry level jobs to start. Even when you “advance”--working for the C-suite or supporting MORE executives, there is no upgrade in the position. You do the same tasks, or more of the same tasks, for (arguably) more people.

I think these positions are often viewed as “a foot in the door” that will lead to something else, but in order to switch tracks, someone has to internally sponsor that change. And why would your executive ever want to do that, when you’re good at your job--so good they can do their own job so seamlessly?? You can’t blame them. But for the person hoping to “prove themselves,” and improve themselves, executives assistance can feel like a career cul-de-sac.

I have seen myself as a career EA (happily!) over the last six years. I thought that would be my career and that was completely fine with me. But as I've been writing and identify more confidently as a creative, things are shifting.

Shifting is such a great word. You’ve opened yourself up to possibility, taking a chance, allowing for unforeseen change. It’s a great strategy to deploy as you move through the world. ✍️ 📚

The “chapped dick of capitalism!” Bahaha!! 😂

They don’t call “executive assistance” the “pink ghetto” for nothing. It can crush you aaaand trap you. While it sounds like you rose to the challenge with strength, fortitude, and dare I say, loyalty(!), I often think of Sisyphus at times like these. Just because you can roll that boulder uphill, does it mean you should?

Proving you can (and will) roll that weight--or NINE times that (super commendable BTW!!)--becomes the norm. The office rolls per usual, thanks to you. What takes the beating?? You do.

Reminds me of my old Honda Civic. The engine kept ticking over, despite my failure to put oil in it...everrr, but the latches started to fail. One time the hood flew up and banged the windshield driving 40 down a country road. Luckily, I wasn’t on a highway. I “secured” it with baking twine in order to creep home. Another time the passenger door fluttered open around a bend in a driveway. The passenger was none too pleased when I advised she buckle up for the rest of the thirty-second drive.

My point being, you were *this* close to all your latches failing, and relying on baling twine to keep yourself together. After all, you had long run out of oil, and rightfully so (!!). So, you go girl! You won’t regret making the change and putting yourself FIRST. After doing it for so many others, you totally deserve this. 💪
